Tree Marking Week: Celebrating Dedication, Unity, and the Road Ahead

As the sun gracefully sets on the horizon, a profound sense of gratitude envelops the heart of Asitu’lisk. We lift our voices in songs of appreciation for the extraordinary volunteers who poured their time, energy, and love into a cause that resonates far beyond the surface – the protection of our cherished Hemlock groves from the invasive Hemlock Woolly Adelgid (HWA).

These trees embody a significance that goes beyond their physical stature. They stand as a tangible connection to our ancestors, an embrace of our history, and a reflection of our culture. To walk amidst these towering sentinels and breathe the same air that once breathed into our ancestors is an experience that defies mere words. It’s a deep-rooted sense of belonging, of being anchored to something much grander than ourselves.

Your unwavering commitment to safeguarding the timeless beauty of our Hemlock groves at Asitu’lisk serves as a powerful testament to the strength of community, the fervor of passion, and the harmony of purpose. Whether you were meticulously measuring each tree’s significance or adorning them with flags that fluttered in the breeze, every action you took reverberates through the forest, leaving an unerasable imprint on the tapestry of times ahead. Not even the rain slowed you down! We especially want to extend our heartfelt gratitude to Maria Hernandez and Michelle Evans for their boots-on-the-ground leadership. Their tireless efforts and unwavering commitment has made a significant impact, and their dedication is truly commendable.

We’re genuinely thrilled to offer you glimpses from this remarkable week. As you swipe through these snapshots, let these moments remind you that each action you took, every step you made, is a stride toward safeguarding the heart of Mi’kma’ki.

With heartfelt gratitude, we extend thanks to our exceptional volunteers. Your generosity etches a lasting legacy into the tale of Asitu’lisk, embodying the heart of this remarkable odyssey.

New Horizons: Treatment Weeks Await

Amid the glow of Tree Marking Week’s shared moments, our focus shifts to an even brighter horizon. The inaugural Treatment Week, slated for September 11-17, is swiftly approaching. This pivotal phase in our journey is dedicated to bolstering our ancient Hemlocks against HWA.

As Treatment Week draws near, we invite you to stand with us once more. Your dedication resonates beyond the trees, promising balance, strength, and a brighter future.

In the spirit of Etuaptmumk (Two-Eyed Seeing), we’re meticulously blending ancestral knowledge and contemporary solutions to shape a holistic approach to conservation.  Together, we’ll embark on this transformative journey, where medicine, ceremony, and cutting-edge pest control intertwine to nurture the forest’s heartbeat; a convergence of ancestral wisdom and modern innovation. Throughout the Treatment Week, medicine and ceremony will be woven into our activities. This integration is more than just an event; it’s an embodiment of our commitment to preserving the sacred balance of nature, culture, and community.
